Easy Crocheted Shawl

Having a need of a shawl to complete a pioneer-reenactment clothing set, I bought two skeins of red yarn last month, and invented this. It is very simple. Use standard yarn (I used RedHeart brand) and a J-hook.

1. Chain (178-small) (186-medium) (194-large) (202-very large).

2. (Neck-edge) Turn, and single crochet in each chain back to beginning. (This makes a sturdy neck-edge for your shawl.)

3. (Body of shawl) Turn. *Chain 6, skip 3 stitches and make a single crochet in the 4th stitch.* Repeat between * until you get to the end of the line, ending by connecting a chain into the end of the line with a single crochet.

4. Turn. Chain 3. *Single crochet in top of the chain loop, chain 6.* Repeat until you come to the last loop in the row; attach to that loop with a single crochet.

5. Repeat Row 4 until on your last row you make only one chain 6 and fasten in with a single crochet in the top of the next loop. (Don't cut off the yarn yet. Keep going.)

Scalloped Edging:

This edging starts at the point of the shawl's triangle, and runs up one side to the neck-edge and back, and then up the other side and back, and helps define the triangular shape of the shawl. Start by taking a look at what you see along those edges: There is a loop space, then a place where rows join, then a place where the chain-3 doubles along a loop, then a place where the rows join, then a loop space again. (Same thing, but with the doubled part first, going down the other side. It doesn't matter which side you start on.)

A. Chain 3 and attach with single crochet to the point of this last chain-6 loop.

B. (Strengthening the edge) Going along one side back toward the neck-edge, repeat this pattern: *2 single crochet along the chain (either the single chain or the outermost of the double line chain), 1 single crochet in the space where the rows join* until the end, then single crochet once in each of the neck-edge rows. Chain 1, turn.

C. (Scallops) Count back the way you came three stitches, and * make eight double crochets in that third stitch. Count over three more stitches and single crochet once in that third stitch.* (This should be lining up more-or-less with the joining loops of each row, with each scallop covering two rows.) Repeat until you get back to where you started at "A."

D. Repeat, going down the other side, starting with "B."

E. Tie off and Secure, and weave in end.
